ARTS IN EDUCATION VIRTUAL EXHIBITION 2020

Every year the Arts in Education cohort at the Harvard Graduate School of Education puts on a show of their work at the Gutman Gallery. This tradition is an opportunity for the AIE community to come together over their practice as artists and educators. However, due to COVID-19, this year's show couldn't look the same.

This virtual exhibition brings together both current AIE students and alumni to share their artistic practice with the world in the digital sphere. We invite you to click through the artist pages and to visit with their work as you might with us in person at the Gallery.

STRESS, PRESSURE & RELEASE

ICA Teens

Stress, Pressure & Release is a teen-curated collection of photography made during the digital photography programs at the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston during the fall of 2020. The title refers to the semester-long exploration of these teens’ vision and reflection of the world during the pandemic.

Through discussions and creative exercises, these young people explored how to best capture their images. Teens in the Special Focus program looked at a number of photographs to explore photographic narratives, including Gordon Parks’s black and white portraits and LaToya Ruby Frazier’s series The Notion Of Family. The Advanced Photography group explored Ragnar Kjartansson’s installation and video art piece The Visitors, Zanele Muholi’s Faces and Phases series, and Nyema Droma’s portrait photographs of Tibetans.

After these teens took many photographs and selected their strongest, they critiqued each other’s work and curated this exhibition. Additional images are showcased in their portfolios at icateens.org/portfolios.

Teen arts education is central to the ICA. Digital photography is just one of many art forms teens can explore at the museum. The ICA’s award-winning teen programming serves approximately 6,000 youths annually. We believe that robust arts education—including learning by doing—is critical to building future artists, audiences, and engaged citizens, and we aim especially to create a more equitable education for Boston area teens.

EN-VISIBLE WOMEN AT HARVARD

On View starting on 2/15/2022

Too many times women are unseen, mis-seen, or under-seen. En-Visible Women at Harvard is a project that places women of color in the foreground in a space where they have historically been placed in the background. The prefix "en" means "to go into." Each photo shows women of color coming into visibility.

Virtual reception will take place on 2/16/2022 at 5p.m. EST. Join us as we welcome photographer and Harvard Kennedy School student, Thomas Bishop, to discuss his photojournalism project. Register here: bit.ly/En-VisibleReception

This project is a collaboration between Gutman Library, the HGSE Black History Month Planning Committee, and the Anti-Racism Policy Journal, a Harvard Kennedy School student-run publication.
